Congratulations! When you’re having a baby there’s a lot to be excited about, including finding out your little one’s gender! Using colour powder in an exhaust or burnout for a gender reveal are a super popular and fun way to announce your pregnancy to friends and family.
We have noticed an increase of motor enthusiasts combining their love of cars, trucks and bikes with celebrating the impending birth of a new family member. This results in a colourful cloud of powder that looks like smoke shooting out from the back and tops of their mighty machines, unveiling the gender of their unborn bub. It looks amazing!

How do you use Coloured Powder in an Exhaust Reveal?
1. Park the car, truck or motorbike where you are going to do the reveal.
2. Open the bag of colour powder using a funnel or syringe to pack the powder into the exhaust. Someone who already knows the gender will have to do this.
3. The powder does not need to go in too far or be packed in too tight. Conceal the colour by placing a cup or paper towel/tissue over the exhaust so that your guests don’t get a sneak peek before the big reveal.
4. Get the camera ready to capture everyone’s response.
5. Once you’re set up and ready to go, get some drama and tension happening with a countdown, turn on the ignition and hit the accelerator as you’re starting the car. The result will be an amazing vibrant cloud of coloured powder, revealing the gender of your baby!
How to do a Gender Reveal Burnout?
Our coloured powder packaging is too thick and sturdy to be used for a burnout, so you’ll need to transfer the coloured powder into a thinner plastic bag and you’ll probably want to use black to conceal the colour. The plastic must be thin to ensure it breaks open when the burnout is performed. Black garbage bags are good for this. Create small pouches filled with coloured powder, one for each wheel. We recommend 500grams to 1kg per bag. The more powder, the bigger and better the burnout!
Once you have created a pouch of coloured powder, tape this to the wheels and perform your burnout. Alternatively, you can wedge the colour powder pouch under the wheels and accelerate, initiating the burnout. Either of these methods will pop the bags open, spraying the colourful powder into the air.
TIP: It’s a good idea to do a practice run with white cornflour from the supermarket to make sure you have the technique mastered before the big reveal.
Is it safe to do an Exhaust Gender Reveal or Burnout?
Lots of people have used our coloured powder for gender reveal burnouts and exhaust reveals but we should point out that this is not the intended use for the powder and you do this at your own risk to people and property. Please confirm the legality of what you are planning with your local authority.
How Much Powder Do I Need for an Exhaust Gender Reveal or Burnout?
The amount of colour powder that you need for your exhaust gender reveal depends on the size of your vehicle and how big you want the effect to be. Most customers will use anything between 1kg to 5kg of coloured powder. The best way to determine the right amount is to do a test with white cornflour from the supermarket before purchasing the coloured powder.
Don’t worry if you have coloured powder left over, we have lots of ideas for other fun gender reveal activities or photos, such as throwing the powder up in the air in celebration or a colour powder fight.
